Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. PLEASE NOTE: I will NOT send any item, no matter what its value without a Royal Mail or courier tracking number. ALL my items must be signed and trackable to comply with Ebay delivery rules. Please do NOT ask me to make any exceptions to this rule as no country offers 100% reliable service without it.

Label/Format: Asylum Records with matt, very gently textured surfaces. This a very first issue with the correct SYLA 8753 catalogue number. Later pressings were changed with the new Kinney K 53007 number.

Label Conditions: Both generally clean and attractive with moderately light, faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole. The odd gentle trace of tone spotting viewed right up close.

Brief Info: The highly acclaimed fifth Joni Mitchell album. Best-known for the song ‘You Turn Me On, I’m a Radio’, a more commercial song written as a request by her label for a hit single – a feat it achieved in the United States. A beautiful album written at the time after her split with singer-songwriter James Taylor. A superbly packaged album with a double opening gatefold cover. One picture shows Joni naked on rocks in the sea – like the lady herself, it’s done in the best possible taste. This a lovely UK first issue, cover-protected, the difference immediately apparent, the record plays very well also. For fans of this brilliant and legendary Canadian artist, this proved a joy.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. An unlaminated double gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces (bar the first opening inside which are gently textured), and including, of course, the correct SYLA 8753 catalogue number. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse, includes the polylined white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Minimal blemishes on this highly impressive front. Clean, fresh and attractive, hardly creased, any marks few and very faint with no sticker issues.

Cover Back: Very similar again with little to fault bar the merest trace of a rim arc rub at top and bottom (look hard). The lack of ugly ring wear is always good news on such covers.

Cover Inner Gatefolds: The rose picture is by Joni who is a keen painter. All four surfaces are immaculate as-seen. The first opening ‘roses’ surfaces are less smooth with a gentle textured finish, the record enters the cover from this area.

Top Edges: All straight, flush and flat with any traces of thickening to the single thickness ones very light and minimal. The main back fold is superb, barely worn at all and clean.

Bottom Edges: These traditional storage edges are almost the same as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: All in superb condition again and again like above.

Spine and Text: A quite thick and highly impressive spine. Solid, straight with barely any compression and folded square, so all edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn, also superbly centred for maximum good looks. Again no fading on this often exposed edge. Being single thickness, this is seldom seen like this or better, the avoidance of crushing and flattening makes this close to exceptional.

Corners: Any tip rubs or creases tiny and light, hardly any really. Excellent or better shape mostly retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A beautiful piece of rock art and in great condition, a first issue that totally blows away its considerable age. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): with any discolouration light to politely remind of age. It has two neat window circles with just a couple of tiny nicks one side, the polylining fresh and reasonably clear, no hard creases, just some natural crinkle. All edge folds naturally intact. This has the dual PATENT Nos 112555 and 1072844.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: a fine visual copy that is clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy likely modestly played with surface marks light, mostly quite wispy and faint as seen more critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even register. Visually a fine original record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic early Joni album plays even above it’s visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this has no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Like most of the early Joni albums, this has some quieter songs, so the odd sporadic contact sound is near impossible to avoid totally, but this heavier original record is very well pressed and offers little else other than high-quality sound. Few available copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played modestly and has been very well stored within a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
