GRADAZIONE RIGOROSA - STRICTLY GRADED
Sleeves and vinyls are visually graded after a careful check in bright sunshine on my roof terrace. In the gray days I watch the records under a strong halogen lamp with the help of a magnifying glass. All records in auction have been fully heard. Lps on a Rega Planar 3 turntable with a Grado Statement 1 moving magnet cartridge, EPs and singles 45 rpm. on a Thorens TD 166 BC turntable with a Goldring 1006 MM cartridge. Considering that the usual classifications such as Mint, EX, Vg, etc…, etc… are not significant to explain the real condition of the records in addition to a total subjectivity of opinion, I always introduce before these classifications a short description concerning any defects I have verified with the exception of Mint minus, the highest grade I declare. I use MINT/MINT exclusively for the still from factory sealed copies.
Notes : do not be surprised if reading below the tracklist you will find that all the compositions are by José Mário Branco with the exception of the beautiful song "Hino da Confederação" written by Sérgio Godinho and Fausto. In reality, the first two musicians already had in common a long exile in France lasted until the fall of the Portuguese dictatorship in 1974. Branco, man from the indomitable and rebellious character, found in the younger Godinho, who had been on the barricades of Parisian May 1968, a very good ideological and musical interlocutor. There were several collaborations between the two artists. Despite being just my humble supposition, I believe that even in this album the presence of Godinho does not concern solely the mentioned above song but could broaden at least to an exchange of compositional ideas with Branco. The film plot is fertile ground for the latter musician, after so many years spent in exile, since it tells the story of a fierce dictatorship in an indeterminate future period. The soundtrack is almost entirely based on folk songs full of political connotations where it speaks of oppression, struggle, resistance, freedom. The singing is blunt, completely averse to dull and pathetic tones, the vocal timbre is vigorous with a generally fast and very percussive rhythm. The musical accompaniment is led by acoustic guitars, flute, chorus, drums and percussion. Comes out from the schema now briefly described the instrumental track "Cinema Mudo" (b3) characterized by beautiful improvisations of Rui Reis at the piano evoking nostalgia with a bitter background, "Valsa Talvez" (b5) from romantic atmosphere and "Hino da Confederação" (b1) where the superb vocal tonality of Luisa Alcobia is well supported by piano, trombone and chorus. The songs and the music are alternated by some short announcements read by the same Branco and the actor Jorge Cortês who plays a soldier in the film.
