MEGARARE and HARD-TO-FIND Philips Records very first Mono press released, made and distributed in Chile in 1969 by Discos Philips (Philips Records), licensed from Philips Holland, catalog number 369.002, with hand etched matrix numbers 369-002-A EB-CD in Side A and 369-002-B- EB-CD in Side B, with traditional dark blue/silver Philips Records labels. Yes, Sirs, ANOTHER FIND from Chile!!!

The first to tell about this rare single is that “Penina” is a song written by Paul McCartney in 1968 while he was in the “Hotel Penina”. The legend about this song is more than known but I guess it’s interesting to see what Paul McCartney says about the story behind this song:

“I went to Portugal on holiday and returned to the hotel one night slightly the worse for a few drinks. There was a band playing and I ended up on the drums. The hotel was called Penina, I made up a song with that name, someone made enquiries about it and I gave it to them. And, no, I shouldn’t think I’d ever record it myself!” (1994)

The band was Jotta Herre and then they released a 4-songs EP including the song “Penina” but only about 1000 copies were sold. A few months later another Portuguese singer, Carlos Mendes, ex-member of The Sheiks (the Portuguese Beatles) recorded a version which sold better and gave the chance to see a single released in other countries considering the fact to have an obscure song by Paul McCartney. And the same year, 1969, this single was released here in Chile. Song titles are written in Spanish, translated to English in the case of song “North”, with full credits for songwriters and original Dutch catalog number informed in both labels, “369.002 PF”, time of each song and information about the licenses. WOW!!! A MUST TO HAVE for all fans and collectors of Paul McCartney and The Beatles!!! How many times have you seen this Chilean press of “Penina”? Your own answer will tell you the real level of rarity of this single!!!

This record doesn’t have a cover. The record is in VG+ or even EX- condition both sides, glossy and clean, with soft scuff, hairlines and light scratches hard to see at first sight, which don’t affect play. Labels on both sides are in great EX or EX+ condition, clean and clear, with only some spindle hole wear and a faint scratch in Side A. The sound is in great VG or VG+ condition the Side A, with a very soft background noise (surface noise is normal in records from Chile), but loud, clear and clean, with some soft crackles, more evident at the beginning and end of the song, and in VG+ or EX- condition the Side B, with only soft crackles, which don’t really affect the experience to listen and enjoy this record from the beginning to the end. Overall, maybe this record isn’t for the strictest Minty minds or audiophiles, but sure this is a great record in this MEGARARE PRESS with a great look, almost immaculate labels and still a nice sound quality which will satisfy any serious collector!!! So, here you have the chance to get and own this MEGARARE SINGLE with the song “Penina”, written by Paul McCartney and never recorded by himself!!! Yes, Sirs, what a FIND!!! We don’t use the generic “VG” most of South American sellers use to hide poor quality conditions or “NM” or “Mint” for records which aren’t even clean and sound less than a normal “VG” in professional standards. We use the Record Collector’s Grading System with a little modification: we don’t use MINT grade but for Sealed records and we can use a + or – to show a most professional accurate description.

MINT (M): I only use this grade for Sealed records.

NEAR MINT (NM): The record itself is in like new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality (only some very very very light hairlines caused for the record rubbing the sleeve). The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in like perfect condition.

EXCELLENT (EX): The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality, maybe some surface marks which doesn’t affect play. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD (VG): The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD (G): The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

FAIR (F): The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump.
The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

POOR (P): The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD (B): The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.

GBP15 for weight until 1kg (usually 1 or 2 records 12" depending of thickness of the vinyl)

GBP25 for weight 1-2kg (usually 3-5 records 12")

GBP10 for one 7” record

All records will be packed outside of the sleeve to avoid damages in the cover and all records will be sent with tracking number via Small Packet or Parcel Post services.

We don’t have anything to hide and we know the buyers expect to receive feedback after to pay for the items they win. Most of sellers say to give feedback when buyers leave feedback first. But we know that’s not fair for buyers. So, we leave feedback immediately after to receive the payment, because we understand that’s the part that buyers must receive feedback for.
