Rarity: Rare, this 2007 box set by Peter Saville was limited to just 3,000 copies and sold out almost immediately. It has a typical Factory minimalist design and will seldom be seen or offered.
What’s Included:
A box set has all new ‘artwork’ - a very minimalist design – no text or logos on the box, LP sleeves, or labels. Outer box is grey hessian, thick and rigid. LP sleeves are presented in the original paper stock – with a textured plain black sleeve for ‘Unknown Pleasures’. ‘Closer’ has a plain white sleeve. ‘Still’ has plain grey ‘hessian’ hardback cover with fold out sleeve with a white ribbon. The first two albums have a plain white and pale grey card inner sleeves. ‘Still’ has two mid grey card inner sleeves.
Included is a 12 inch square black printed cardboard insert with the song titles (minus Twenty Four Hours) and credits, it also mentions the 3,000 limit edition. The original shrink-wrap included a b&w sticker which I have retained as seen.
To be clear: while not mentioned on the track list, this version of ‘STILL’ also includes the extra track ‘Twenty Four Hours’.

Label Conditions: All practically as-made, they are either black or white. I only played this set a couple of times.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.
Warps: Few vintage records are ever perfectly ‘flat’, so some slight or very gentle arm movement is normal. If any record I offer has more than that, I will mention it, and it can be assumed all I offer will track without issues, even on budget turntables.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Anyone with any interest in this Joy Division rarity will already know this is the band’s first two studio album classics, and the third double set released after Ian Curtis’s tragic death. ‘Unknown pleasures’ was their debut and released on 15 June 1979 on Factory Records. It is regarded by many as one of the greatest debut albums ever. ‘Closer’ followed on 18 July 1980, also on Factory Records, and again received wide critical acclaim. The double set ‘Still’ consisted of previously released and unreleased studio material and a live recording of Joy Division’s last concert at Birmingham University. It was released on 9 October 1981 also on Factory. Their music was intense, full-on and very dark – but within that darkness was a genuine beauty and the sounds on this set have not aged at all. Curtis was unique and few bands ever had a singer with this much energy and raw power. This heavyweight box set captures all the brilliance of this amazing young band and a quality legacy to their music and memory.
The Box: NEAR MINT: A very solid (like a hardback book) quality-made box with a full hessian-like covering, this opens full out as seen in the pictures. It really has little to fault being practically as-made with all corners and ends crisp and sharp. All surfaces clean and fresh, I have handled this hardly at all since opening and carefully storing.
- Unknown Pleasures and Closer Covers Grade and Format: Both Near Mint. They are single formats, Unknown Pleasures is plain black with NO design, but has the textured finish like the original cover. Closer is plain white and smooth, again with no design as all – both very minimal. Both clean, fresh with no grubbiness, rubbing, knocks or dinks – little short of as-made again.
Still Cover Grade and Format: NEAR MINT: The outer is a like a hardback book and like the box, has a hessian style covering. The inside is white and also textured. The spine area has a white tied ribbon which is clean and neat, as is the entire cover. Inside has a grey card wallet like design that holds the two albums inside their inners, this is held in place by the ribbon. All corners and edges solid and crisp. Still very solid as this has hardly ever been opened or touched.
The Inner Sleeves: NEAR MINT: All four inner sleeves are practically like new again. The first two albums are solid unlined card inners with recessed top openings. Still inners are plain grey card with die cut holes to expose the labels, again unlined. All clean and fresh with all edges unsplit, and all corners crisp with no knocks.
The Credits Insert: Practically Mint. This is a square twelve inch black sheet and includes text for the songs and credits on one side, the other being plain. The text visible better under light and feels embossed into the card. No creases or dinks, its superb.
Cover Summary: Stylistically minimal – but that is the old Factory label way – and it works beautifully. It adds a mysterious darkness to this legendary band and their music. Some might say the original artwork for the covers should have been included, but then it would have been just the same as before. This very limited and rare box set packaging is unique – just like the band, and I would never want to change this. It will prove difficult, to near impossible to find better and should please most fans and collectors.
Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–), this set was played only a couple of times, and still looks the same as when I purchased it. Clean with fine shine and very heavily pressed as seen in the weights listed further up, ‘Closer’ hitting a massive 198 grams.
Album Played For Grading: Yes. [Equipment used: Pro-Ject X2 B Turntable, Ortofon MC X30 moving coil cartridge, Pro-Ject DS3 B Phono Preamp, Naim SuperNait 2 and Spendor A7 floorstanding speakers.]
Sound Quality and Audio Grading: All superb with little unwanted, any contact sounds minimal and light. Few originals will match or better this impressive 2007 tribute box set I feel sure. One for serious Joy Division fans and collectors. This is not seen or offered often, so not one to lose lightly.
The records have been professionally cleaned on my German-made Nessie vinyl record cleaning machine.
They will be removed from the main cover and placed inside a soft-lined white inner to avoid edge splits in transit.
It will be posted for UK delivery via a Royal Mail tracked service. More expensive albums will be posted Special Delivery. The price will be £4.50.
