The first time I ever saw Mike Judge was in 1983. My 4 absolute favorite records at the time were all from the burgeoning New York scene... EP's from The Abused, Urban Waste, Cause For Alarm and Antidote. I had loved the NY Thrash compilation but those 4 records took NYHC to a whole new level of moshability. As it turned out, The Abused and Urban Waste were playing the Anthrax in Stamford, CT, and I was beyond psyched. When I got to the club, I saw that carfulls of NY skinheads had come down for the show to support their hometown bands. Hardcore was very small back then so the scenes were very territorial and usually if your band played out of town you'd bring your friends just in case. By the time the Abused went on, New York had taken over the dancefloor. And right smack in the middle of the pit was Mike Judge. He didn't move. He didn't mosh. He just stood his ground in the middle of the circle pit, raked his face when the slow parts hit, and stomped menacingly on the ground while people slammed wildly around him. Us locals couldn't figure him out, and there was an element of danger and unpredictability about a guy who didn't dance on the dance floor. Maybe he didn't have to. Maybe he was a leader of some kind. The Abused were incredible but the Anthrax crew kept their distance, especially from that guy. Little did I know in a couple of years I'd be in a band with him.
