Label/Format: Vertigo – Full Spiral on side one and large Spiral logo on side two. Please note also, this is one of the earliest pressings ever on this famous prog label. This fine example includes the text ‘A Philips Record Product’ at the 6 o’clock position of the text side label. Only the earliest pressed Vertigo’s ever included this rare text, most are seen without it.

Label Conditions: Both in lovely visual condition, with only light and faint spindle marks. Ultra clean and highly attractive with no grubbiness or discolour to the ‘white side’. Simply stunning Spirals with the large formats and rare Philips text. Side two retains a superb snowy white finish that is as fresh and clean as press day. A very snug fit on my Linn spindle with no ‘give’ whatsoever, I would think this record has not seen light of day since the early 70s. The large spiral on side one has the design perfect right up to the very hole rims with no chipping or wear at all. These labels are SUPERB and if much better Philips originals can be found, well you are indeed very lucky.

Cat Number: VO2 (847 901 VTY).

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 126 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce on Spiral. Including the ‘Philips’ label text, this is far rarer and in this condition, well it should speak for itself. All spirals are getting harder to find all the time, many highly elusive with fewer becoming available. Including one of the most famous Spiral covers too, that is no less delicate than most of the others, this is a very fine copy that should please many collectors of this highly desirable label.

Original Year of Release: 1969

Matrix Nos: 847901 A1 420 1 1 2 / 847901 2Y2 420 1 1 1 (both sides have VO numbers struck through). This is an absolute first, the most ‘1’s I have ever seen on this title ever.

Musicians: Ray Owen - lead vocals; Glenn Campbell - steel guitar, mandolin, marimbas, vocals; Chris Mercer - sax electric and acoustic piano, organ; Neil Hubard - guitars; Keith Ellis - bass guitar, vocal; Pete Dobson - drums, percussion.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The band’s first (and probably best) album and the second title within the highly sort-after Spiral catalogue – probably the most famous and collectable progressive label of them all. Boasting too one of the very best and famous covers too - this is always one of my favourite albums to offer and this is a very solid copy. Earthy blues-rock featuring a supreme version of Bo Diddley’s ‘Who Do You Love’ (also covered by The Doors on Absolutely Live). This copy on offer features a great sounding ‘Philips’ product’ full spiral record. It has some light surface marks that have no sound and audio quality is fantastic throughout. The cover looks very nice and has only a few mild visual blemishes. Very wear-prone like most spiral covers, but this one does the famous ‘Lucy’ proud. For collectors wanting possibly the earliest-made pressing and a solid EX copy, well this should suit nicely.

Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very high.

Cover Grade and Format: EX. Like the record, one of the earliest Spiral covers ever issued or made. An unlaminated gatefold format that is highly vulnerable to wear, especially ringwear and rubbing. This one has the original WARNING — Copyright subsists in all Vertigo recordings. etc inside the gatefold, later versions had the word ‘Vertigo’ changed to ‘this label’. This was printed and made in Great Britain.

Cover Front: A few eyebrows raised when this first hit the shops I guess. Quite unusual to find this famous front looking this nice. Most show moderate or more rubbing. This has only light rub traces and a few light surface marks that only really show with angled viewing. There is one small scratch mark near the left edge but is fine and relatively faint. No creasing or ringwear and generally clean and attractive.

Cover Back: The back is similar but even better. No ringwear and any rubbing is very mild and slight. The VO 2 – 847 901 VTY top right text is pristine. With so many of these (and often later versions) looking shabby, worn and very tired, its a delight to see the classic Spiral cover looking this nice.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Emphasise again, this has the original ‘Vertigo’ warning inside and these are far rarer. Beware of cover swapping, only the original have the Vertigo Warning inside. This is little short of perfect inside.

Top Edges: Patchy rubbing to both.

Bottom Edges: Very light patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and quite sharp with little wear. No feathering with minimal burr traces. Record entered on this right outside back edge.

Spine and Text: The spine is in very fine condition. Thick and solid, very straight with no compression and square, both right edges meet up near perfectly together and parallel too. Although some of the text is very fine, all is fully intact and showing no wear at all including the delicate VO 2 number. Even on the foldlines, top and bottom are unworn with all ink intact and unrubbed, this is so unusual on these and even the very top and bottom corner areas have minimal rubbing. A tiny top corner tip-in is possible (but NOT by me hasten to add).

Corners: All corners have tip rubs, the spine pair very little. All retain very decent shape and definition.

Cover Summary: A fine EX example and the famous ‘grand old lady’ of prog covers will be quite difficult to find much better these days. Not one for the perfectionist but many Spiral collectors should enjoy this one.

The Inner: Around EX and these are getting harder to find in top conditions too. Original format (of course) this is polylined. All sealed edges are unsplit or torn, very little age toning or gum browning. A few tiny holes, mainly on one side that have minimal visual impact and very little creasing. Overall, a fine attractive Spiral inner.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX(-) with some fine surface marks but they have NO sound and this record plays superbly throughout. A fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again, but not the visual perfectionist.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This excellent record plays above its visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal to none and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. The surface marks are ignored and being honest, I have heard few better sounding copies of this album than this. Few copies will outperform this earliest pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy could prove difficult to find significantly better for clean enjoyable sound and on that basis can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
