Few indie rock ladies have earned the right to be called a Grand Dame. Julie is on her way to becoming one of the best indie has to offer. Former bass player for Eric's Trip (Canadian Indie band), this cd finds Julie Doiron returning with her former band to back her solo effort. There is an enhanced video of `Me and My Friend' if the cd is played on a computer.

There are blended slightly askew overlapping vocals upon vocals that tie up at the end of the verses. There are wispy guitar works that vibrate and hiss with a quiet urgency. Fans of Happy Rhodes or Cat Power would definitely enjoy this excellent piece of indie showwomanship. Doiron is a renaissance woman of sorts: she can write, she's a professional photographer, and has played on several indie releases including Tragically Hip cds.

It's a bit grittier than Natalie Merchant, but the vocals have similar textures and tones. Not over produced, but not quite lo-fi, there is some hiss and unintentional echo that only adds to the subdued effort that Doiron easily manages to convey. I strongly suggest that you give this cd a listen. If you can appreciate the guitar twists of Vic Chesnutt, you will enjoy the minimalist approach Doiron uses.

In der internationalen Web-Community ist die Sängerin der verblichenen Grunge-Randerscheinung Eric’s Trip mittlerweile ein großes Thema, mir begegnete sie erstmals vor fünf Jahren mit ihrem feinen „Désormais“-Album und seiner zelebrierten Traurigkeit mit französisch gesungenen Texten, irgendwo zwischen Chanson und introvertiertem Singer/Songwritertum, in den Reviews ungefähr zwischen Joni Mitchell und Tara Jane O’Neil verortet. Heute, nach mittlerweile fünf Soloalben, klingt sie allerdings anders, singt englisch und wird von manchen als die kanadische Cat Power bezeichnet, was angesichts der stimmlichen und musikalischen Ähnlichkeiten sogar ganz gut hinkommt – insbesondere in den ruhigeren Songs, wo sie zu ihrer akustischen Gitarre singt. Wenn dann die markante Stimme gedoppelt wird, darf man gerne auch an die insgesamt aber deutlich schrägeren Coco.Rosie denken. Und bei mehreren Songs hat Julie Doiron dann auch eine richtige Rockband im Rücken, die sich prompt als die reformierten Eric’s Trip entpuppt. Im Bandformat wirken die ansonsten etwas spröden und introvertierten Songs dann lockerer und luftiger, zweimal wird sogar richtig gerockt – und zwar auf der Basis von coolem Country-Beat. „No More“ hat sogar das Zeug zu einem kleinen Indie-Hit – nicht unbedingt das, was man von der Kanadierin erwarten durfte. Die stilistische Öffnung ist aber unbedingt ein Schritt nach vorne und sollte diesmal auch breitere Hörerschichten ansprechen. Verdient hätte sie es allemal. Wunderschönes Album!
