JUNIOR WELLS
MYSTERY TRAIN
There were a couple of "child prodigy" harpmen in the early days of Chicago Blues. Little Walter was playing the street by age 14, cut his first record at 17 and soon after was a full time member of Muddy Waters band. Another player, Junior Wells, first sat in with Muddy when he was 14, and was working steady with The Aces by age 16. When Walter left Muddy after his "Juke" became a runaway hit, he hired The Aces as his backup band, and Wells went to work with Muddy, recording the classic "Standing Around Crying" with him in the fall of 1952. Next June, Wells had his first session as leader, for the States label, he was 18. [Tony Glover]
After States he moved on to Chief in 1957, then in 1959 cut one single each for Kapp, and Shad, Profile, USA, Bright Star and All Points. In 1968 he found himself as the new guy at Vanguard Records.
This single is a killer updated version of the old tune “Mystery Train” and it his the shops that summer. Nobody noticed much, but it was there. This rarely seen 45 is flipped with “Stop Breakin’ Down” and is a stock copy – not the typical promo.
