Damien Jurado has enjoyed a long and varied solo career, but there have been consistent traits throughout that quarter century. As 'What's New, Tomboy?' proves, his is a world that is quiet but not listless, it's tender, kind and politely inquisitive, but also hurt and helpless. Many of his songs feel written from the perspective of empathetic observer rather than first hand participant, and he's most comfortable writing deep balladry. In many ways then this isn't so much new territory as a fantastic example of how Jurado has won over so many fans across the world. 'Sandra' is a sweet sunset serenade, acoustic guitar and melodic vocals threatening to leave very few eyes without a glint of teariness. 'The End Of The Road' takes us down rougher and readier guitar streets, wisened journeyman stuff, which is similar to the welcome of opener 'Birds Tricked Into The Trees'.
