Innovari

First we created some complex automotive designs. Then we solved each design problem with a practical use of steel. Result? The Innovari. Even though you won't see this experimental sports station wagon on the road, every steel innovation that went into it has a practical application today.

Transparent Stainless Steel covers the tail lights, instrument panel and a section of the inside door panel. The Stainless Steel is photoelectrically etched with perforations so small they're almost invisible. It looks solid until backlighted, then the Stainless Steel is transparent. The cantilevered rear seat is a bench type modification of the torsion bar concept introduced earlier by U. S. Steel. This means fewer parts.

Touch a button and the Innovari doors open on a single stamped steel hinge. The door and quarter inner panels are USS Embossed Carbon Steel that match the interior soft trim. U. S. Steel has 18 different patterns of Embossed Steel on the market. For beauty and durability, the roof panel, door panel insert, fender mouldings and exhaust stacks are USS Stainless Steel.

The Innovari is 52 inches high, but it has the package area of a car having a 55-inch height. With full use of carbon steel capability, we reduced the size of the header so there's more window area and less visual obstruction. U. S. Steel developed a new adhesive— PQE 1—that bonds together the inner and outer hood panels and the inner and outer door panels. PQE 1 muffles noise and can reduce spot welding or surface grinding. The inner hood panel doubles as a carburetor air duct and reduces the hood height by reducing the air cleaner thickness. Where structural rigidity counts —in the cowl, toe board and underbody—we used a lightweight USS Steel Sandwich panel concept in combination with the steel frame.

We also used low cost production methods such as cold formed wheel hubs and steel fiber draw dies.

Steel makes the Innovari a safer car. High strength alloys from the USS Family of Steels achieve an optimum balance between rigidity and yield. Seat belt anchors, buckles and attachments are alloy steel. The unique core of the sun visor is an energy-absorbing steel armature encased in a soft plastic cover for passenger protection.

During U.S. Steel's 1966 automotive presentation of "Innovations in Steel" to officials of the motor car industry, the Jack Brokensha Quartet and the Lenore Paxton Trio provided a distinctive jazz background for the occasion. Their particular jazz style is high-lighted in the theme selection, "Steel Blue" which was created especially for the show as a musical tribute to U.S. Steel's concept-in-steel, Sports Station Wagon, Innovari.

We like the originality of "Steel Blue" so much that we invited the two groups to a recording session so that this album could be made for you. We hope you enjoy it.

JACK BROKENSHA

Percussionist Jack Brokensha moved from his native Australia in 1953, settled in Windsor, Canada, and formed the Australian Jazz Quintet whose popularity soared almost overnight. This was later reorganized to what is now the Jack Brokensha Quartet.

Although he is best known as a jazz vibraphonist, he is also proficient at all percussion instruments. He has played under Toscanini and augments the percussion section of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He holds a staff musician's post at WXYZ broadcasting station but finds time to concertize, lecture, make television appearances, compose and disc jockey for FM station WQRS on the Detroit scene.

LENORE PAXTON

Lenore Paxton is a former classical piano student who studied at Wayne State University and the Detroit Institute of Musical Art. Her professional experience in Detroit includes the Bakers Keyboard Lounge, the Act IV, the Statler Hotel and the Playboy Club. Out of town dates include the Town Tavern in Toronto, the Americana Hotel and the Embers in New York.

At the time of the recording of this album, Miss Paxton completed a 13-month engagement at the Caucus Club in Detroit with bassist Fred Housey. The third member of the group is drummer Bill Steen.

Grading Information

M = Mint

Absolutely perfect in every way. Certainly never been played, possibly even still sealed

NM = Near Mint

The record should show no obvious signs of wear. A 45 RPM or EP sleeve should have no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling. An LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits or other noticeable similar defects. No cut-out holes, either. Of course, the same should be true of any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves and the like. Basically, an LP in near mint (NM) condition looks as if you just purchased it from a record store.

Very Good Plus

VG+ = Very Good Plus

A Very Good Plus (VG+) record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experiences. Slight warps that do not affect the sound (DNAP) are "OK". The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. The center hole will not have been misshapen by repeated play. In general, if not for a couple things wrong with it, this would be Near Mint. All but the most mint-crazy collectors will find a Very Good Plus (VG+) record highly acceptable.

VG = Very Good

Many of the defects found in a VG+ (Very Good Plus) record will be more pronounced in a VG (Very Good) disc. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound. Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. The same will be true of picture sleeves or LP covers.

G = Good

Good does not mean Bad! A record in Good (G) condition can be put onto a turntable and will play through without skipping. But it will have significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear (on a styrene record, the groove will be starting to turn white). A cover or sleeve will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the object.

All records are mechanically washed and vacuumed to insure great sound quality.

We are not perfect and mistakes happen occasionally. If you get what you feel is a mis-graded record, please email us and let us know so the issue can be resolved. We will always work to resole any legitimate issues in a prompt, courteous and professional manner.

Packaging Information

Each disc is shipped in a brand new paper sleeve. The cover is placed in a brand new plastic protective sleeve (excluding box sets) to insure that it arrives safely along with the disc outside of the cover to eliminate seam splits during shipping. Sealed LP's are always shipped intact and unopened.

All LP's are shipped in a sturdy new mailer designed specifically for shipping records with one heavy cardboard insert to help prevent bending. Additional padding may be added at $.30 per pad. Please let us know if you require additional padding. This does not mean that they are bullet proof and at times the postal service can and will break things. When this happens you need to contact your local post office.
