Description

Here’s a very rare 78rpm disc by Jackie Brenston! This is the legendary 1951 release of “Rocket 88”, which some consider to be the first rock and roll song ever. This is an original pressing on the Chess label, number 1458. This songs were recorded at Sun studios by Sam Phillips a good three years before Elvis Presley, and the rights were leased out to the Chess label. The backing group (credited on the label as “The Delta Cats”) is actually Ike Turner’s band, with Ike showing off some commendable piano skills. The story goes that on the way to the session, the band strapped their amps to the top of their car, and one fell onto the highway, damaging the speaker. This produced a distored guitar sound, which Sam Phillips liked… and there you have it, one of the first instances of distorted guitar sound committed to record. This 78 is definitely used but not abused… a good amount of groove wear, plays with some noise and hiss, music is still enjoyable. There are some general abrasions throughout the disc but nothing deep, no cracks, small edge ding on the B side that’s only halfway through the trail-on and nowhere near the music. Plays with no skips. Labels are as pictured. Very rare record!
