Janet Leigh Unreleased Acetate from 1963 Bye Bye Birdie Soundtrack "One Special Boy"
The 1963 musical comedy film “Bye Bye Birdie” contained a song “One Special Boy” that Janet Leigh sang along with Ann-Margret and Bobby Rydell. The released version of the song in the film ends with Janet Leigh’s somewhat syrup laden lyrics protesting her devout love for her boyfriend Albert Peterson (played by Dick Van Dyke) However on this acetate, the lyrics sung by Janet Leigh are full of anger at her boyfriend and even at herself for putting up with Albert. The anger that Janet expresses is almost palpable. Listen to the song sample provided on You Tube (look for

Janet Leigh One Special Boy 1963 Bye Bye Birdie Unreleased Acetate

and compare it with Janet’s released lyrics.

It is understandable why this version of Janet’s lyrics was cut from released film. In 1963 this would have been considered too angry for a woman to be at a man that she was still involved with. This film came out in 1963 which was almost a decade before the emergence of the women’s’ liberation movement of the 1970s. It is so different from the released version that it is striking. Consequently this version of Janet’s lyrics has never appeared in any form. It certainly was not in the 1963 film or soundtrack. Nor has it been released in any of the expanded reissues of the soundtrack.

The disk is in VG+ condition. It is likely that this acetate was created to review Janet Leigh’s performance of this rendition of her part of the song. Once the producer decided against this rendition, the acetate was discarded. This has to rank as one of the rarest pieces of Bye Bye Birdie and Janet Leigh memorabilia in existence. Because of its acetate form, it is certainly a one of a kind.
