Jeff St John’s Copperwine 1st Press OZ LP Joint effort NM ’71 Spin Psyche Prog

Original 1st Press OZ LP released in 1971 on the Orange & Black Spin Records Label. Cat: SEL933742. Stunning copy the finest I have seen this album in!!
Every so often Timewarp is lucky enough to come across a special record collection. Over the following weeks I will be listing records from one such collection. Collected mostly during the 1960’s and 70’s this set of records have been well preserved and cared for some dating back to over 50 years old!! Our regular customers will be aware that if we do grade a record at Near Mint expect it to have only been played a handful of times at most and to sound superb. We hope you enjoy the records we will be offering as much as we have in presenting them to you.

At the height of his fame with 1960's Australian mod / r'n'b / blue eyed soul combo, The Id, Jeff St John picked up and quit in 1968. He put together a new combo in 1968 called Yama (hindu for mere mortals) featuring bassist Virgil East from from Python Lee Jackson and drummer Peter Figures from Sydney 60's punk legends, The Throb. After releasing one 7" single in 1968, Yama evolved into COPPERWINE by 1969. COPPERWINE melded together elements of funk / soul / psychedelia and progressive rock into one. The choice of covers on this album are touchstones to where they were coming from. Tunes by Sly & The Family Stone, The Four Tops, Blind Faith, Washboard Sam & The Temptations are all given a work out. COPPERWINE's Joint Effort was released in 1970 to critical acclaim but scant initial sales. As Jeff's legacy began to grow the album would become a perennial seller in the early 1970's and has been described as a fine artefact of what was musically going on with Australian rock in this heady and fertile time, documents what a fine band Copperwine was and provided conclusive proof that Jeff is one of the best rock vocalists this country has ever produced. The band is augmented on these recordings by a clutch of Australian music luminaries including John Sangster (vibes & glockenspiel), Billy Thorpe (harmonica), Doug Ashdown (12 string & dobro guitar) and produced by Pat Aulton.

Tracks: Cloud nine/ Sing a simple song/ Fanciful flights/ Any orange night/ You don’t have to listen/ I been treated wrong/ Days to come/ Reach out/ Can’t find my way home/ Train/ I remember/ Environment in 3 parts.

There are a few light spindle marks on labels. Record is stunning no scuff marks or scratches at all and is in Near Mint condition. Gloss cover is like new with only a few tiny surface tears along right hand front edge and is in Near MInt condition.
