Description
Jethro Tull began as a psychedelic-blues quartet during the late '60s and gained some attention thanks to singer-flautist Ian Anderson's stage antics. In 1969 Tull released 'Stand Up' on the Island Records label (ILPS 9103) and it made it to Number 1 on the UK charts, a considerable achievement in the '60s for a relatively new band. 'Stand Up' not only had some outstanding songs, but also had spectacular packaging - a gatefold sleeve with caricatures of the group which actually stand up when the sleeve is opened. Produced by Terry Ellis & Ian Anderson, the songs were a perfect blend of riff-rock, English folk, and a new "progressive" style that stood out immediately to critics and fans alike. It contained several potent rockers and the group's trademark rendition of J.S. Bach's "Bouree". It is, in my humble opinion, one of their most beautiful and memorable albums.
Condition of Gatefold Jacket: Excellent(+) ....showing only minor wear to 2 corners and edges...spine is near-perfect, "Pop-Up" is perfect. Previous owner's name written at the back (top left) and inside inner gatefold. (See photos)
Condition of Record: VG+(+) ......despite some faint hairlines/marks, name written on Side 1 label, the whole album plays beautifully because of the deep groove pressing. There is the occasional tick that is heard but the sonics are so outstanding that it does not detract from the music at all. The ONLY flaw significant enough to mention occurs during the last song on the 2nd side (For A Thousand Mothers) About a minute into the song there is some sticking. Annoying, but at least it happens towards the end of the record and arguably, on the weakest track. But there's always a possibilty it won't happen on another turntable. Normally I would never offer a record with this kind of issue; but because of the rarity of this particular pressing and the unbelievable audio, it is offered to those who appreciate and understand 1st press sonics. If not for this flaw, I would be asking $250.00+ for this copy.
Fully and Heavily textured labels.
Matrix numbers: Side 1 ILPS + 9103 + A Side 2 ILPS + 9103 + B
Aprox. Weight of Record: Between 160g and 180g....typical of the early "Pink" Island pressings....very impressive.
