Was bought used by this seller many years ago and now offered from his private collection (you have
absolutely known provenance). While having it, was played only a couple of times on an expertly
setup high-end audiophile turntable, arm, and cartridge. Has never been exposed to heat or tobacco
smoke and always stored vertically in a specially designed record cabinet (Rackit) to prevent warpage.
Because of its age, was cleaned (after photos) on a VPI HW 16 with Audio Intelligent 3-step cleaning
process. The 1st cleaning solution used was the Enzymatic Formula to remove water-insoluble and
protein-based contaminants such as mold-release compounds, fingerprints, fungi, and bacteria. The
2nd stage solution was the Super Cleaner Formula to get any contaminants left by step 1. The last
stage was an Ultra Pure Water rinse (50x purer than distilled water) to remove any lingering traces of
cleaning solutions. I wear nitrile surgical gloves 100% while cleaning and play testing to avoid
any chance of transferring finger oils to the vinyl.
Very sensitive play testing was performed straight off my Ayre P-5xe fully balanced phono preamp
over Sennheiser HD 600 headphones thru a Schiit Audio Valhalla 2 tube headphone amp fitted with
Voskhod Soviet matched tubes (see last photo).
Track list
A: And The Gods Made Love, Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland), Cross Town Traffic, Voodoo
Chile.
B: Little Miss Strange, Long Hot Summer Night. Come On, Gypsy Eyes, The Burning Of The Midnight
Lamp.
C: Rainy Day, Dream Away, 1983... (A Merman I Should Turn To Be), Moon, Turn The Tides... Gently,
Gently Away.
D: Still Raining, Still Dreaming, House Burning Down, All Along The Watchtower, Voodoo Chile
(Slight Return).
I never take "distant" photos nor the so-prevalent type with the LP sticking halfway out of the jacket.
I take close-ups under photo lamps so you can see nearly everything I describe in the jacket grading.
It is virtually impossible to know the true vinyl condition from any photograph. That takes very bright
close visual inspection AND thorough coverage play testing on high resolution equipment.
Grading
Note: record grading by text characters is subjective and does not fully describe quality
levels. Please see my photos and very detailed descriptions below.
Outer Jacket: VG to VG+(Very Good to Vary Good Plus) There are no tears in the Clarifoil lamination
but there are tiny separations in the creases. The front cover has the most creases at the top left,
bottom left corner. sleeve side middle, and bottom right corner. There is a crease-bend at the top right
corner. In the upper right corner I found some "scribble marks" on the top left front. These could only
have been created by someone writing with a ball point pen on paper laying over the top front of the
album. I could only detect these when I tilted the jacket cover towards a bright light. There is a fog-like
halo ring that is also hard to see unless one tilts the jacket towards a bright light. I rate the front VG.
The rear outer surface is in much better shape with very smaller creases mostly on the right spine
side not much greater than about 1/2" long. It also has a halo ring wear similar to the front. Rate it VG+.
The inside gatefold is very well preserved with only about 7 light creases with only two of them on the
Jimi half, very short and thin. I'd rate the Jimi half at VG++ and the Mitch/Noel side VG+.
There is mild rubbing wear on all corners but virally none on the jacket edges. The spine edge looks
unworn.
Vinyl: VG++ to NM-
Visual Inspection - After cleaning, surface visuals were first inspected under high intensity halogen
light. All spindle holes looked very pristine. Label A has only a couple of very light turntable post
"scribbles." Label B has only one, and Labels C & D have none. The cleaned vinyl has high gloss and
deep luster. I could't find any scratches and the only "hairlines" I could find were a couple on side C
that were microfine and sitting well above the groove modulation. Sides B&D looked perfect. Side A
had some grayish "mottling" in a narrow angular slice between tracks T3 and T4 that could not have
been damage from mishandling by the former owner. They looked just like some pressing artifacts I
have seen even on brand new records right out the sleeve. These would need to be checked on the
play testing to see if they caused any repeating noise on rotations (see play test results below).
Play Testing - Starting SA I heard a little bit of lead-in groove repeating crackle into T1 that quickly faded
away. The music is loud and dense with a good amount of compression applied to contain Jimi's
unhindered playing style. This keeps any vinyl crackle noise pushed way down. Once SAT1's volume
picked up that initial crackle faded away into silence. At the very end of SAT3 I heard a short burst of
crackle that repeated each revolution. This was the "mottling" in the pressing I noted above during visual
checks. That repeating crackle radially faded away to nothing in less than 2 minutes as Voodoo Chile
ramped up around Noel's bass line entry. On all long tracks like this one I advanced my arm about 1/4"
at a time listening for a few minutes at each drop until the end. I also listed to the start and end of each
track and all the transition grooves between each track. On all other tracks the vinyl was remarkably
quiet. In all the rest of my play testing I just did not hear anything else that had potential to be distracting
from the music. Ticks or clicks were single events big distances apart. Even most transition grooves were
quiet. The vinyl did not just "look like it was hardly played," I proved to myself that it sounded like that too.
I couldn't find anything negative to say about sides B,C, and D. The outstanding tracks for me in terms of
music and audio quality for were SB-T3,T4,T5; SC-T1,T2(my top cut); and SD-T3,T4. Voodoo Child (Slight
Return) blew me right out of my chair with the power of Jimi's performance. Side C to me was the
"audiophile side" because the recording, mixing, and mastering had so much presence, dynamics, clarity,
realism, and frequency extension. This was stuff to stress-test your system and demonstrate what it's
capable of doing. My summary of all the play testing is that 96% of the grooves sound clean, quiet, and
play very very strong.
