Born in Meridian, Mississippi, the son of a section foreman on the Mobile & Ohio Railroad, Jimmie Rodgers grew up in an exciting world of roaring trains and impatient whistles. It was in this romantic environment that he first heard some of the songs and ballads that were to influence his life profoundly. When he was fourteen, Jimmie Rodgers was employed as assistant to his father. For fourteen years thereafter he worked on the railroads as flagman, call-boy, baggage master and brakeman until he eventually was forced to leave this strenuous life because of delicate health. The life of a professional entertainer also proved to be too strenuous a career for Jimmie. The strain of show business is severe, and he was subjected to opening night tension and the constant exhaustion of traveling from one engagement to another from his first job as a black-faced singer in a medicine show through his years of touring with a trio of musicians called "The Jimmie Rodgers Entertainers" to his almost overnight success with bestselling records and theater engagements all over the United States as well as in England, Mexico and South America. After a few years, Jimmie's health forced him to curtail his activities to a great extent. He died in New York in 1933. One of the unique and truly American ballad singers this country has ever known, Jimmie Rodgers built up an amazing following during his all too brief career. His songs were loved by all who heard them. Family groups delighted in their unabashed sentimentality. Hobos in poolrooms chuckled at his ballads. Professional soldiers, railroad men, policemen, lumberjacks and many others all found enjoyment in his homespun melodies. In memory of Jimmie Rodgers, then, and to the many persons who have never forgotten him this collection is dedicated.
