Very Fine and Rare 3-LP Set of the Notorious and Outrageous John Cage 25-Year Retrospective Concert in New York's Town Hall, May 15, 1958. Live, un-edited recordings throughout--occasionally punctuated by cat-calls and bewilderments of an audience unprepared for Cage's audacious musical modernity. This set can only be called a definitive sonic document of one of the greatest, modern, avant-garde concerts ever held in the U.S. Participants beside Cage and his unabashed crew of performers included Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, and Merce Cunningham. Cage himself performs several of his own works here. Pieces performed include Concert for Piano and Orchestra (1957-58, David Tudor, soloist); Six Short Inventions for Seven Instruments; Imaginary Landscape No. 1 (1939); Wonderful Widow of Eighteen Springs (1942), Cage accompanies on Piano; She is Asleep, Quartet for 12 Tom-Toms (1942); Music for Carillon (1954); Williams Mix; Sonatas and Interludes (1946-48) Maro Ajemian, Piano; etc. Set includes original, oddly printed, 1937 Cage manifesto on "Future of Music" plus extensive concert notes, and then 12 separate, double-page sheets including excerpts from actual musical scores used and Cage's commentary on them (see photo examples).
