John Coates, Jr. "The Jazz Piano Of" LP 1974 1st Press Onmi Sound    FACTORY SEALED

Recorded Live February 3,1974  Northampton Community College.

For those who know John Coates' work the best, it might be described as superbly spontaneous; but Coates the man is rever impulsive.  For a number of years his many fans have been encouraging him to make a record.  But it was not until Uyoshio Inomata, executive producer for Omnisound, said, "Hey, can we put some microphones and see what happens?" that this album happened on February 3, 1974 at Northampton Community College.  Without rehearsal and with the help of DeWitt Kay, bass, and Glen Davis, drums things were arranged, and the result is, we feel, some of the most exciting jazz to be put down in a long, long time.

Side 1 consists entirely of John Coates originals and leads off with "Love Is Enough" which opened the concert.  The out-of-tempo intro is characteristic of Coates as if he were checking out the local "vibes" and establishing the atmosphere for what is to follow throughout the piece and album...rhythmic excitement, polytonality, contrapuntal wizardry, dazzling technical dexterity, and an amalgam of styles that pay homage to many of this century's keyboard greats but comes out unique John Coates.

John Coates has been into "The Beatles" for a long time.  In fact, he may have been one of the first jazz men to recognize the improvisational opportunities in the now "classic" Lennon-McCartney tunes.  Here he treats "Yesterday" as a solo piano effort.  After a semi-rhapsodic opening --including some especially tasty modal touches--he introduces in contrapuntal from a treatment that suggests a whimsical English country dance, then returns to a more complex rhythmic and harmonic exploration of the tune.

Don't miss your chance to add this great vintage John Coates, Jr. LP to your collection.  Record and Sleeve are Mint Factory Sealed...Record comes in heavy duty plastic sleeve and is packed professionally.

Below is our grading scale which is the industry's Standard Goldmine Grading Scale.

Mint (M) - Pristine, Looks as if it just came off the manufacturing line, also listed as New, Mint Sealed/Unopened.

Near Mint (NM) - Looks as if it just came from a store and was opened for the first time, maybe played a few times if ever, no evidence of play or wear what-so-ever.

Excellent (EX) or Very Good ++ (VG ++) - LP may have a faint surface mark or two barring it from being truly Near Mint, but sound quality will be be affected at all, Cover Sleeve is just short of Near Mint , often used for cover sleeve in Shrink, or with no Ring Wear or Staining or easily visible flaws whatsoever, seam and spine fully intact.

Very Good Plus (VG+) - Shows slight signs of wear, slight scuffs or scratches may be present but they do not affect playback other than faint surface noise heard sporadically in between tracks, or the occasional soft click from surface mark here or there, Cover Sleeve is considered still "Frameable" yet when observed closely will show to have a flaw or small flaws, very minor.  Ring Wear if any, seam and spine intact but not Pristine.

Very Good/Very Good Plus (VG/VG+) - More obvious signs of wear and handling, LP has surface noise that is noticeable in some spots but perhaps is quiet and clean in other spots, clicks and pops will be heard, but will not significantly disrupt the music.  Cover Sleeve shows more obvious Ring Wear or marks/staining, seams may have cracking, minor seam splitting or some missing spine text but are still fairly well intact. Writing may be present on label.

Very Good (VG) - Significant and obvious wear and handling includes surface noise throughout, audible scratches which causes clicks and pops and crackle but no skips or repeated grooves, Cover Sleeve may have significant Ringwear and/or staining, seam splits may be evident, label or sleeve may have writing, name, stickers etc.
