I am auctioning off selected items from my personal collection of top-drawer LPs. Here we go with an original mono copy of John Coltrane’s ace February 7, 1968 date for Prestige Records, Prestige 7142, “Soultrane.” The band is one of  the tenor saxophone giant's favorites during his Prestige years: pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Art Taylor.

The session is a breakthrough of sorts for Trane, as he rolls out streams of double-timed sixteenth notes on “Good Bait,” an early documentation of what Ira Gitler later called Coltrane’s “sheets of sound” aspect of improvisation. In a far quieter mood, Trane offers a gorgeous rendition of Fred Lacey’s ballad memorializing Ernie Henry, “Theme for Ernie.” Billy Eckstine's "I Want to Talk About You" is another stellar ballad. “Russian Lullaby” is a very fast romp where the leader swings like mad. Every track is a winner.

And since it was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder at his Hackensack studios, the audio is spectacular, with a live sonic sense on any sound system.

The record has been cleaned on a VPI Record cleaner and is graded after being played as follows:

Vinyl: VG+: There is some surface crackling here and there and a few pops, all of which do not seriously affect play. Mostly plays M- with no noise whatsoever.

Cover: M-: Except for a few small spots where there is obvious wear, the cover looks new with original sheen, hardly any ring wear or discoloration. Address is 203 So. Washington, Bergenfield, NJ.

 The address adds to the album’s already substantial interest: it’s the first Prestige LP released at the label’s new NJ home, following the move from Manhattan.

Labels: Both sides have a deep groove in the center of the classic yellow and black Prestige label. The address is 203 So. Washington, Rudy Van Gelder’s stamped initials are in the dead wax.
