Description
This is possibly a unique original Van Gelder-stamped test pressing of John Patton “Let ‘Em Roll” on the Plastylite labels of Blue Note BLP 4229. Side 1 has a single small inaudible scuff at the end of the last track; Side 2 has several inaudible scuffs, but the overall appearance of the grooves suggests that the record has probably been played only once or twice. The important aspect of this test pressing is the fact that it was pressed prior to the label’s sale to Liberty and has the Plastylite “P”, whereas the commercial issues have no “P”. Another point of interest is that the Plastylite logo has been defaced with a blue marker on both sides, indicating that the new owners of Blue Note (Liberty) had changed pressing plants and were under obligation to remove Plastylite’s name from all existing product. Another interesting point is that the catalogue numbers on both the labels and dead wax are “BLP 4229”, which are for Patton’s “Got a Good Thing Goin’” (which has five tracks). “Let ‘Em Roll” (which has six tracks) was issued on BLP 4239, indicating that Liberty made a significant change in its Blue Note catalogue numbers and release dates.
