A glorious 40th anniversary double gatefold LP on 180 gram red vinyl unearths a mixture of past classics from Tractor s career and previously unreleased recordings. 40 years ago John Peel confirmed his undying love for all things Rochdale by releasing an album and buying recording equipment for Rochdale band Tractor. Their important lineage in music history that can be traced through to Joy Division, New Order and The Happy Mondays via the recording studios and festivals they kickstarted are explored on the inside of the gatefold. John Peel s wife Sheila provides detailed comments for the back of the LP sleeve, John had worked at Townhead Mill in Rochdale in 1959 whilst future office sharer at the BBC young Andy Kershaw was attending a nursery school near to the mill at the time. Andy Kershaw states I would say Rochdale finally emerged from the second world war some time around 1972 . In 1972 the year the first Tractor recordings came out on LP via John Peel .

Rochdale was a hotbed of counter culture activity and that continued right through until the early nineties- In 1972 it had its own alternative newspaper and a group of sculptors including the country s first graffiti artist Walter Kershaw. A 1972 open air festival in the town hosted Adrian Henri, Roger McGough and Linda Lewis with indoor gigs from Tractor, Bridget St John, Hunter Muskett the Strawbs and Brinsley Schwartz.

The success of the 1972 Tractor recordings has continued to hold the band in high esteem for forty years. // Time Out in the 1970s Tractor - Urgent lyrical, of stagggering depth, range and eclecticism // Classic Rock 2005 Tractor- fire , precision and vision ... an underground benchmark // Julian Cope Tractor -certainly the sound of a soul approaching the canopy of heaven // Sheila Ravenscroft John chose to back Tractor and help them financially and it s strange really because as a result of that indirectly Cargo Studios, The Deeply Vale Festival PA system and Suite Sixteen Studios happened and lot of amazing bands went to Rochdale to record and were grateful for that break.

When you think about it a lot of Northern Music wouldn t have happened without John s original decision to back Tractor in the way he did. In 2009 two blue music plaques were unveiled on premises Tractor used to occupy linking them to John Peel and Joy Division.

PACKAGING

We’re record lovers too and hate receiving items marked as ‘Mint’ and turns out to be scuffed or ripped. This can be avoided!

We use top quality packaging materials - so all our items arrive with you, the buyer, in top notch condition.

Please note: all records are removed from their sealed packaging UNLESS REQUESTED OTHERWISE. Once removed from their packaging, they are kept in a 250g polysleeve which ensures protection. The record(s) and its sleeves are then placed between 2 stiffeners. This ensures that everything arrives exactly as you’d want it to.

Remember - we all need to recycle where possible, so with larger orders and larger items, we re-use the packing boxes and protective wrapping received from our suppliers.

Grading based on Record Collector Guidelines:

Mint   The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as sealed or unplayed should be Mint.

Excellent   The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

Very Good   The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good   The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration etc.

Fair   The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise, it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

Poor   The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

Bad   The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.
