Description
This is an original mint sealed copy of John Phillips first solo album, known as The Wolf King of LA, although not appearing on title of LP. This LP features some of Phillips most inspired compositions. The LP also features on guitar famed Rock and Roll Hall of Fame sideman, James Burton.
John Phillips (The Wolf King of LA) is the first solo recording by the Mamas & the Papas leader John Phillips. All songs were Phillips originals, dealing mostly with recent events in Phillips' life, including references to his new girlfriend Geneviève Waïte and longtime friend Ann Marshall ("April Anne"). The backing musicians included members of Wrecking Crew. Today the album receives favorable reviews from fans and critics alike. The album was selected as one of ShortList's 50 Coolest Albums Ever.
As Phillips was the backing singer in the Mamas and the Papas, with the other three serving as lead singers, the album mix tends to de-emphasize his lead vocals. Denny Doherty stated that, had the Mamas & the Papas performed this album, it would have been one of their finest, because of the strength of Phillips' songs. The single "Mississippi" reached the US Billboard top 40. Phillips and the other members of the Mamas & the Papas were threatened with a lawsuit just as the album was released, discouraging the label from promoting the album
The album is completely sealed with all four corners very sharp, although the top corner by the spine shows very slight rub wear where shrink is slightly open. There is also a small cut out hole at the top left corner of cover near the spine, signifying LP was a record company cut out. There is slight corner wear on three of the four corners with the lower spine corner being very sharp. The seams and spine are very strong with no splits and the front and back of cover are very clean.
The LP is being sold without reserve and payment is expected within 3 days of auction close. Return of the LP will only be accepted if the LP is returned still sealed.
