John Prine - Common Sense, Atlantic K50137 LYRIC INSERT
For this album, John worked with Stax label's guitarist Steve Cropper in the producer's chair, bringing with him the great Duck Dunn and other cats who would soon be recognizable as the Blues Brothers and whose masterful playing highlight Prine's homey country funk-folk feel throughout. Highlights include "He Was In Heaven Before He Died", "Way Down", and "Saddle In the Rain" all of which turn gut-wrenching feelings of loss and grief into the growth and perspective that begets wisdom. Balancing the weight of these classics with levity, "Middle Man", "Wedding Day In Funeralville", and "My Own Best Friend" showcase his trademark wit and ability to turn a phrase in such a way that appears offhanded and easy, yet upon second thought again carry the weight of truth. The album closes with a rave up on Chuck Berry's "You Never Can Tell".

Vinyl: NM. Looks like it just came from a retail store and it was opened for the first time. The finish is shiny, with no visible defects. Labels are superb, clean and bright without marks. Spindle shows no sign of wear. And no warps.
