John Renbourn – Self Titled was issued in the UK in 1965 on Transatlantic TRA 135. This is a lovely early pressing on the famous (second) purple and white label (indicating it was pressed between 1966-1971). Matrix numbers A 1-5 / B 2-5.

It was Renbourn’s first album (excluding the collaboration, “There You Go”, with Dorris Henderson) and undoubtedly his rarest solo album.

“This is the first record to come out under my own name. And it had my picture on the cover. That was in 1965, back in the days when the record company was under the impression that a picture of me might be good for sales. Most of it was done in a little demo studio not far from Les Cousins in Soho. The single front-laminated sleeve is generally in superb Excellent + condition with no discernible wear other than a little very gentle wear to the opening edge. There are 4 creases in the laminate on the front whilst a previous owner has inserted, quite neatly in pen, on the rear of the sleeve “Side 1” and “Side 2” within the tracklisting, as this is not otherwise indicated. Otherwise for an unlaminated, predominantly white surface around 45 years old, the rear is exceptionally clean. The spine text is perfectly legible.

The vinyl is in Excellent – condition. A few wispy hairlines are visible on the surfaces when viewed under a strong light, yet the record plays beautifully with no loud clicks, pops or crackle. There is a little light crackle occasionally audible between the tracks and in the quietest sections of the music. This is likely to be within the pressing and, in my view, adds additional atmosphere to this legendary recording. Both labels are in beautiful clean condition.

All my records are cleaned on a Moth Mk II RCM and play-graded in their entirety on a Rega Planar 3 turntable with RB300 tonearm and Denon DL-304 MC cartridge tracking at 1.5 g through an azur 840a amp via Chord Odyssey 4 bi-wired cable into KEF Q900 speakers. Inferior component-type turntables without proper tracking are more prone to sticking and jumping than high-grade turntables. If you love vinyl, do yourself a favour and invest in a decent system if you don't already own one. You don't have to pay thousands. Excellent quality 2nd hand turntables are available on eBay for around £100 (about the price of 1 rare LP). Your investment will be more than rewarded by the additional listening pleasure you derive.

Grading :

M = Mint - as new

NM = Near Mint - very few, light signs of usage that don’t affect play - the cover has only minor signs of wear.

EX = Excellent - some signs of usage, but very little lessening in sound quality – the cover might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VG = Very Good - no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch - normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items.

G = Good - the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches - the cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

+ and - are used as appropriate.

Shipping Policy :

If not still sealed, records are taken out of the sleeve to avoid splitting. They are posted in professional mailers with proper stiffeners for extra protection. These are pre-used and so are provided free of charge. A polythene sleeve is also always included.
