Johnny Ray & Miss Teddi King - 2 Rare Collectible, Early 1950s 10" 33 RPM Albums
Johnny Ray – Columbia, CL 6199, mono, 1951. Disc: VG; light surface scratches. Cover: G-; split across top and bottom, back is heavily oxidized, cover is reasonably clean for a 62-year-old record.
Johnnie Ray is the debut album by Johnnie Ray. The album was the first in the history of recorded music to be released with no title (other than the artist's name). On various tracks Johnny is assisted by the Four Lads vocal group, Mundell Lowe on guitar, Nick Fatool and Ed Shaugnessy on drums, and Stan Freeman on piano. The Goldmine Price Guide values this record at $80 if in Near Mint condition, but you can own this survivor for a lot less.
Storyville Presents Miss Teddi King – Storyville, LP 314, mono, 1954. Disc: VG; could use a good cleaning, but has relatively few surface scratches. Cover: VG+; no splits, back is slightly oxidized, cover is very clean for a 60-year-old record.
This one is SO rare, it's not even in the Goldmine Guide! But Allmusic gave it a 4-star review saying: "Storyville Presents Teddi King captures a dark, maudlin edge absent from King's later LPs--its late-night ambience perfectly complements her lyrical, contemplative vocals, adding new layers of intimacy to this most honest of singers. Backed by an exemplary supporting unit including trumpeter Ruby Braff, pianist Jimmy Jones, bassist Milt Hinton, and drummer Jo Jones, King fully inhabits material like "It's the Talk of the Town" and "Love Is a Now and Then Thing," summoning new and deeply personal meaning from their familiar messages." This Storyville label is a now-defunct jazz label founded by noted jazz promoter and producer George Wein in Boston in 1950. Wein has been called "the most famous jazz impresario" and "the most important non-player... in jazz history." This Storyville label is not related to the current Danish record label of the same name.
