John's Children - Orgasm <White Whale> 1970
Napier-Bell decided the best way to satisfy White Whale's expectations was to get the band to record a 'live' album. He put them in the studio and told them to play their 10 best songs as well as they could and then spend a few thousand pounds doctoring the tapes and overdubbing them with screams and shouts from the Soundtrack to the first Beatles movie 'A Hard Days Night', which he'd got hold of the tapes of for a few hundreds pounds. The end result was Orgasm, which still sounds like one of the worst albums ever recorded. Much of the music on this eminently forgettable item is drowned by screaming girls. The cuts included Strange Affair, the strange and unconventional flip side to their debut 45 and one of the very first slices of British psychedelia; But She's Mine (which sounded very similar in places to The Who's I Can't Explain) and became the flip side to their second 45; and Jagged Time Lapse, which was eventually the flip to their final 45. The sleeve, with a girl on the cover, was flyposted across the USA and the album attracted advance orders of 35,000 but a few days before its projected release date in March 1967, a group of moral guardians, The Daughters Of The Revolution, took exception to the record's title and sleeve and plans to release it were shelved! Finally in 1971 White Whale resolved to release it in a new sleeve, blocking out the offending title, but after only a few promotional copies had slipped out they decided not to release it after all.
