Sleeve Notes:
His own Junior's Tune has an unpretentiously infectious line - as do his Blues For Beverlee and Birk's Works-that presage the possibility that he could add some staples to the modern iazz
repertory. His lines, in any case, are a completely accurate reflection of his playing style - swinging, economical, blues-inflected'. Junior's steady support is from Lex Humphries' who has been working with Dizzy Gillespie, and the nonpareil rhythm section foundation, Ray Brown. l'd suggest a separate listening to this record for Ray alone - his unerring time, fullness of tone and taste.
Note also his beautifully constructed solo in the Blues' a performance that also underlines Junior's own total familiarity and pleasure in that idiom. Junior Mance, in essence, is a particularly pleasurable example of that new generation of players - Ray Bryant is another -who have absorbed much of the previous iazz language, respect it feel an emotional identification with it, and have developed their personal styles on a combination of present harmonic and rhythmic usages and what they feel to be the best of the jazz tradition. They have a pride of background and the characteristic jazzman's determination to add their own stories to the continuing collective autobiography that is iazz history.
