Keith Christmas
'Fable Of The Wings'
B&C, UK, 1970
CAS 1015
Ostensibly one of the most undervalued folk rock artists of the era returning to the studio with a concise and haunting selection of songs edging Christmas closer to his own personal holy grail. Uninhibited and completely experimental the tracks here ooze the long forgotten craft of idealistic opportunism getting to the very brim of self-expressionism in a way not unholy connected to the vibe of the Incredible String Band and Nick Drake.
The eight minute ‘Lorri’ is so startlingly alive with expression that it remains a lynch pin of his work overshadowing the shorter material by a wide margin. Jazzy, in parts, but locked into a timeless groove the song progresses through a mesmerizing middle section before exploding at the other end with a return to the original refrain. Ditto ‘Waiting For The Wind To Rise’ and the title track ‘Fable Of The Wings’ with its frantic, almost desperate, tempo and breathless vocals.
With a sympathetic production from September Productions initiator Sandy Roberton and a host of golden talent providing Christmas with superior musical support, this album projects an opportunity that wasn’t, for a change, squandered on irreverence.
Aforementioned contributions doshed out by a cast that included bassist Pat Donaldson, drummer Gerry Conway, jazz keyboardist Keith Tippet, drummer Roger Powel and superb backing vocal contribution on ‘The Fawn’ by Shelagh McDonald.
