First issued on Vertigo in 1971, Keith Tippett's second album remains one of the most audacious fusions of jazz and rock ever put to tape. The British pianist leads a formidable line-up - including Elton Dean, Marc Charig, Nick Evans, Robert Wyatt and Gary Boyle - through a set that veers from tightly swung grooves to wild abstraction. Wyatt's explosive drums drive 'This Is What Happens', while the sprawling 'Thoughts to Geoff' and 'Green and Orange Night Park' showcase Tippett's free-flowing piano against scorching horn lines. Elsewhere, 'Five After Dawn' offers a more impressionistic pause before the rollicking 'Black Horse'. Reissued from the original tapes, this is a joyous, chaotic, and utterly essential statement of 70s British jazz-rock.
