Kenny Dorham And The Jazz Prophets Vol. 1
ABC-Paramount ?– ABC-122
The one and only 1956 U.S. original, never reissued in any format
I give a grade of VG+ for the cover ... but I'm being a little lenient based on its age. Check out the pics and evaluate for yourself.
- No splits anywhere.
- The front-side is gorgeous.
- The rear-side shows shelf wear, and light yellow spotting near the top-seam.
I give a grade of VG+ for the vinyl ... again being a little lenient and comparing it to the playback of other 1950s records.
- There are a few marks, as noted in the closeup flash pics, but they don't impact the audio. Visually the record is VG to VG+ (again, accounting for its 60-year age and comparing it to the THOUSANDS of other records I've graded ... I think that's fair.)
- As for the audio, I think it plays great, and in my opinion that is most important. I'm pretty strict for my own personal collection, and I always try to notify or advertise when I hear audio deficiencies. (I listen for snaps, pops, fuzz, and static. If there's none of that, I'm pleased.)
- This Dorham LP is VERY enjoyable. VG+ is probably an accurate grade for the audio, upon very close listen ... maybe an even VG if we're applying modern-day standards (i.e., if it was a brand new record).
- I turned the volume up loud and set the treble very high. I heard ticks and sporadic snaps in the background of Side A, behind the music. Same on Side B, with a few louder snaps and pops. There is also a bit of fuzziness when played loud w/treble. But it's not distracting to my ears.
- At a normal lower volume, with less treble, it sounds really great.
I've cleaned the record with a Spin-Clean, then re-cleaned it with a VPI 16.5. It is currently stored in a audiophile-quality inner sleeve, and housed in it's own separate generic cardboard sleeve. This protects the integrity of the original cover.
For this record, I will use Priority Shipping ONLY. This comes with insurance.
It will cost more but, for a record like this, you should be willing to pay extra.
