KENNY DORHAM MAX ROACH ART BLAKEY 10" "New Sounds" Blue Note 5010, DG, P, Mono Vinyl
This is the 10", 1952 first pressing, Deep Groove, Flat Rim, Frame Cover, "P"-pressing of KENNY DORHAM MAX ROACH ART BLAKEY and JAMES MOODY's "New Sounds" on the "767 Lexington Ave NYC" labels of Blue Note BLP 5010. Musicians include Kenny Dorham, Haleen Rashid[x], Sahib Shihab, Musa Kaleem[xi], Ernest Thompson, Walter Bishop, Jr., Laverne Barker, Art Blakey and others.
VINYL plays with consistent medium-loud level surface noise. Occasional ticks. Instruments are primarily clear, clean. Vinyl looks very good, super high gloss; no feelable marks. No distortion. No locked grooves. No groovewear. No warps. The "767 Lexington Ave NYC" labels are very clean. See photos.
FRAME COVER is in nice shape; with minor lower cover discoloration. Spine is worn, one-inch split top end. Corners worn. Top seam is worn; 3-inch split top right. Bottom seam worn, no split. "BLUE NOTE RECORDS, 767 Lexington Ave., New York 21, N.Y." back jacket is dirty, faded in spots. See photos.
In December 1947 Art Blakey formed a group for his first sessions as a leader. Dubbed "Art Blakey's Messengers", this group was a precursor to the Jazz Messengers groups of the next decade and beyond. Five tracks were recorded during this session, four of which came out on 78s. Two of the tracks were on the original 10" LP. Three of the other four tracks on the original 10" LP were recorded by a group billed as the "Max Roach Quintet", recorded in Paris in May 1949. This group included James Moody and Kenny Dorham (who was also in Blakey's Messengers). The final track was recorded by a Moody-led group in Switzerland, in April 1949. These four tracks were originally released on three 78s.
This LP was play-tested on a high-end system consisting of Music Hall MMF-7.3 turntable/Ortofon Bronze cartridge, Heed Audio Elixir integrated amplifier, Heed Quasar Phono stage and Quad S2 speakers (with very revealing ribbon tweeters). Record cleaned on VPI 16.5.
