RAINDROPS TO TEARDROPS
Kenny & The Kasuals, like many garage bands in the first months of 1964, were greatly influenced by the arrival of the Beatles and other UK groups in their wake. They were students in High School and their garage band started taking on more of a British sound. At the time they were called The Illusions Combo and played at parties and whatever else they could manage.
When go-getter Mark Lee saw them and appointed himself their manager, they also changed their name to Kenny & The Kasuals. Soon they were playing regular concerts at their high school (Bryan Adams) and building a fan base. Their next step was making a record.
It was 1965 and the Beatles had really influenced the band. Instead of cutting some covers of UK songs, they wrote their own. On the topside was "Nothin' Better To Do" and it was paired with the instrumental "Floatin'"
Their first three 45s on Lee's label attracted little attention but during 1966 they started playing at the Studio Club in Dallas and the same year they recorded their first album just to be sold there as a promotion gimmick.
After the release of the LP, Jerry Smith replaced Tommy Nichols on lead guitar and started writing songs with Kenny. This record is from July of 1966 and was the band's fourth single. The topside is the trippy "Raindrops To Teardrops" while on the flip is "Strings Of Time." It picked up a little airplay, debuting on KLIF on July 23, 1966 and being played for five weeks. The record is clearly the next step in Kenny & The Kasuals' progression from punk to psychedelia.
CONDITION: This record would be VG++ if not for one little flaw. On the ‘Strings’ side there is an odd bit of damage to the groove which is raised and you can hear a thump as it plays thru in the second sample at the link above. There is a sound sample following the first side to show you exactly how it sounds. Labels are both bright and clean.
