It is my pleasure to offer for auction a superb example of the iconic progressive rock album by KING CRIMSON titled "IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING", Catalogue Number ILPS 9111. This is an ORIGINAL 1970 UK STEREO PRESSING on the PINK RIM ISLAND RECORD LABEL with a 1st ISSUE BARRY GODBER DESIGNED E. J. DAY MATT-FINISH GATEFOLD SLEEVE. It comes complete with the original plain white inner sleeve. [This is the earliest Pink Rim Island pressing with ILPS+9111+A3 and ILPS 9111+B3 matrix numbers stamped in tall font. The record labels have a pronounced textured finish. "PORKY" and "PECKO" is etched in the run-outs of Sides A and B respectively, which indicates the work of the renowned cutting engineer George "Porky" Peckham].
The thick card E. J. Day sleeve is the very first issue. All subsequent Pink Rim Island pressings came with Robor-made sleeves. It is in VG(+) condition with some storage wear to the edges and a few minor creases. It has small pin-holes in the corners where it has been displayed on a record shop wall. There is also a bit of surface scuffing near the top right corner of the front cover. It is, however, still very presentable and pleasing to the eye.
The heavyweight 160g record is in EX condition. The textured Pink Rim Island labels are unmarked with only a few faint spindle traces each side. There is virtually no wear to the spindle hole. I can confirm that the record has only received a modest number of careful plays on a high quality turntable. Both sides play excellently throughout with no deterioration in sound quality and minimal unwanted noise. As with virtually all Island pressings of the period, there is a degree of residual surface sound present in the form of light crackle and random ticks which are only noticeable during the quieter passages. In my opinion these were inherent in the pressing from new. I have never come across a copy of this album which plays totally silently and I doubt very much that any exist. The A3/B3 "PORKY" & "PECKO" pressings are quite difficult to find. They are acknowledged as being particularly loud-cut and vibrant with outstanding sound quality.
The plain white inner sleeve is in EX condition with no splits or tears - just a few creases.
Overall this is an excellent opportunity to acquire a rare A3/B3 copy of King Crimson's masterpiece which will make a fine addition to any record collection.
GRADINGS
The records that I offer for sale have been critically play-graded, at loud volume, on a Sony PS-X600 turntable fitted with an AT-30E MC cartridge. I will only sell records that play to a high standard. My grading is strict and in accordance with the following descriptions:
· MINT- Record is superb, almost like new, with just a few sleeve removal type surface marks and no deterioration in sound quality. Sleeve is near perfect in all respects.
· EX Record is a top quality example, with just a few very light surface marks which do not sound, and barely any discernable deterioration in sound quality. Sleeve has slight wear and/or creasing.
· VG Record has some visual surface marks, but still plays to a high standard without any major deterioration in sound quality – just a few clicks or light surface sound in places. Sleeve has normal wear and tear without any major defects but is still very presentable.
All records can be expected to rotate sufficiently evenly on the turntable for there to be no effect whatsoever on the audio playback. Minor warps or dishing will not be mentioned as virtually all records display these features to some degree and no record is perfectly flat.
PACKAGING
LPs are packaged with care and well protected to ensure that they arrive safely in the same condition as they leave me. Records are removed from both inner and outer sleeves in order to prevent seam-splits in transit.
