KING CRIMSON, IN THE WAKE OF POSEIDON, 1970 PINK ISLAND

Here for auction is an exceptional MINT- example of the second studio album by KING CRIMSON titled “IN THE WAKE OF POSEIDON”, Catalogue Number ILPS 9127. This is an ORIGINAL 1970 * UK STEREO 1st PRESSING* on the PINK ISLAND RECORD LABEL, with THE EARLIEST A//1, B//1 Matrix Numbers, and a stunning 1st issue E. J. Day gatefold sleeve.

The heavily textured gatefold sleeve, printed and made by the E. J. Day Group, London and Bedford, is in EX condition (strictly graded) with only the lightest of wear and no creases. The overall effect is very much like an oil painting. There are a few minor surface rub marks to the front right top corner. [This sleeve is quite unusual in that the two halves of the gatefold have been stuck together the wrong way round during manufacture – so that when you open up the sleeve the gatefold spread is upside down]. You can see from the photos that this is a beautifully well preserved sleeve which should please most collectors.

The top quality Island record is very solidly pressed. It retains a beautiful ‘just pressed’ glossy shine. Visually both sides are in Mint- condition, with only a few very light wispy sleeve removal marks visible under bright light. The Pink Island labels are perfect, with no obvious spindle traces on Side One and just two faint ones on Side Two. I am confident that the record has barely been played.

PLAYGRADE ASSESSMENT:

This is a particularly vibrant and detailed stereo pressing which sounds truly sensational played at loud volume. The record plays perfectly. All frequencies are crystal clear and there is no discernable deterioration in sound quality. Several of the tracks have quiet introductions passages which can easily ruined by excessive crackle and surface sound. Not on this example – all play beautifully with only very low levels of unwanted noise (just occasional very light surface sound which is never intrusive). A better playing copy of this wonderful album may be very difficult to find!

Complete with the original 1st issue white poly-lined inner sleeve which is in EX condition. “British Patent No…” and “MADE IN ENGLAND  B1/0470” is printed in blue text at the bottom, completing the 1970 1st issue credentials.

GRADINGS

The records that I offer for sale have been critically play-graded, at loud volume, on a Rega Planar 3 turntable fitted with an Elys 2 cartridge. I will only sell records that play to a high standard. My gradings are strict and in accordance with the following descriptions:

·         MINT- Record is superb, almost like new, with just a few sleeve removal type surface marks and no deterioration in sound quality. Sleeve is near perfect in all respects.

·         EX Record is a top quality example, with just a few very light surface marks which do not sound, and barely any discernable deterioration in sound quality. Sleeve has slight wear and/or creasing.

·         VG+ Record has some visual surface marks, but still plays to a high standard without any major deterioration in sound quality – just a few clicks or light surface sound in places. Sleeve has normal wear and tear without any major defects. Still a very presentable sleeve.

PACKAGING & POSTAGE

Records are sent out in new “Wrapro” record mailers. These are rectangular and strong, providing excellent protection to the edges and corners. Records are removed from both inner and outer sleeves in order to prevent seam-splits in transit.
