The second Crimson album to feature the core lineup of guitarist Robert Fripp, bassist-singer John Wetton, and drummer Bill Bruford (plus violinist David Cross), 1974's Starless continues the complex structures and hard-edged grooves of Larks' Tongues in Aspic. It's a sound that's firmly departed from the mellotron-assisted psychedelic symphony approach of Lizard and In the Wake of Poseidon. The precursor to the landmark Red, Starless includes such Crimson classics as "The Great Deceiver," the eccentric ballad "Lament," the menacing 11-minute "Fracture," and the sprawling title track, an avant-rock "Bolero" that builds into a cacophony of abstract noise guitar, chattering percussion, fleshy funk bass lines and, yep, mellotron, this time in the service of dissonant harmonies and spooky sound bursts. A must for Crimson completists, and a great first bite for neophytes.

CONDITION & other information ( ratings based on RRPG )
Sleeve: The album came in a matt gatefold sleeve and very few survive in pristine condition because of this. This copy has some minor handling marks but nothing too detrimental and is better than most copies I've seen. Overall condition is strong. Minor storage wear - hardly noticible. Crisp spine with fully legible lettering. It has a small drill hole in the cover indicating that this was a promo copy but it is hardly noticible (see pics) : VERY GOOD.
Vinyl: Beautiful lustre. This copy can only have been played a handful of times. I could only detect one hairline scrarch under very bright light. Small promo drill hole - again hardly noticible ( see pic of label - hole is just above palm tree - you'll do well to spot it! ) Reproduction is STUNNING - the music here veers from quiet to loud but from an audio perspective all tracks pass with flying colours : NEAR MINT.
Inner sleeve: This copy comes with very rare inner lyric sleeve. This is in crisp condition with minor age discolouration. EXCELLENT
Labels: Original pink rim labels- Clean. No writing or anotations. Very few spindle marks : NEAR MINT
Copies of this album in this condition are increasingly rare, especially as the matt sleeve is prone to degrading quickly. If you want a sonically superb copy of this record you'll be hard pressed to find a better example than this one.
