I am not a professional record collector, so please know that when reading my assessments. I am, however, a seasoned amateur collector who has spent years buying and selling records as a hobby. I use Goldmine's "Record Grading 101" as a guide when assessing a record's condition. I grade conservatively as I would rather buyers be pleasantly surprised by an item's condition rather than disappointed. I rarely assign MINT condition to any item as even brand new albums have imperfecdtions (sleeve scuffing, corner dings, etc...). A significantly condensed version of the ratings I adhere to follows (Please seek out Goldmine's guide for more detailed explanations of these ratings):
MINT (M) - A perfect album with no flaws or imperfections Near Mint (NM) - Nearly perfect with only the slightest of minor imperfections Very Good+ (VG+) - Light signs of wear evidnet, including light scuffs or scatches. Mild evidnce of previous handling present. Very Good (VG) - Noticeable evidence of scuffing a scratching that likely causes some mild surface noise, particularly in quieter passages. Good / Good + (G or G+) - Will have significant surface noise and visible wear in addition to likely imperfections on the label. Fair (F) / Poor (P) - Record is heavily worn and likely significantly warped or cracked, and/or won't play through without skipping or repeating.
Item Description:
Up for bid is a moderately HTF 1985 Polygram Records reissue of the 1975 KISS classic Dressed to Kill. Those familiar with the 1985 Polygram KISS catalog reissues will recall these albums were produced in no-frills packages typically absent custom inner sleeves, jacket embossing, extra inserts, or other features included with original Casablanca Records KISS album pressings.
This particular album rates as follows:
Vinyl = VG condition with a variety of surface blemishes and scuffs on both sides of the record. Jacket = VG condition with beginnings of ring wear; the jacket shows evidence of shelf wear allong the edges but still looks respectible overall. Inner sleeve = The generic clear plastic sleeve that originally came with this album is no longer present
This album still has plenty of life left in it and would make a welcome addition to any KISS collection, particularly for those completists who like to collect a variety of pressings. The accompanying photos show the exact album up for auction.
