Here’s a rare double sided blues original from Okeh Records – 1923. A different artist on each side of this platter.
KITTY BROWN is heard here singing “Evil Blues” and is from a session in New York City in late February 1923. She only recorded four songs for the label, all that year, and it seems nothing else for anyone else. She's accompanied by the un-named Ricketts Stars.
On the other side you have LIZZY MILES. She was born on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, and got involved in music while still a teenager in New Orleans, singing with the local bands of King Oliver, Kid Ory and A.J. Piron. She worked as a song plugger for Clarence Williams' and A.J. Piron's publishing company and toured the southern vaudeville circuit, worked in a circus and with minstrel shows, before moving to Chicago in the early 1920s.
It could very well be that connection to Clarence Williams got her introduced to Okeh Records and had her appear on this single shared with Williams' wife, Eva Taylor. On this 78rpm LIZZIE MILES sings "The Yellow Dog Blues" and it is from a session in the middle of February of 1923. She's accompanied by the un-named Ricketts Stars.
