[Item Description] Stunning Record
Ivan Vasilyevich Ershov Russian tenor [Yershov] (Novocherkassk: 1867[8]-1943) studied with the Russian Stanislav Gabel at St. Petersburg Conservatory and with the noted Italian instructor Ernesto Rossi. He made his debut (1893) in St. Petersburg in Faust. He spent many years (1895-1929) at the Mariinsky Theatre, where he had a very successful career. He had a large repertory which included many Russian, Italian, and Wagnerian roles. Although his voice was flawed, he compensated for those defects through his musicianship. Depending on the demands of the music, he was able to sing dramatically or with delicate lyricism. As if it was not enough to define his character with his voice, he was also a creative and sensitive actor with matinee-idol looks, which made him enormously popular with his audiences. He was also a successful concert and lied singer. After he retired from the stage he taught at the Leningrad Conservatory.
Lev KLEMENTIEV (1868-1910) Klementiev was another of the legendary imperial Russian singers. His few records are incredibly scarce and most collectors have never even seen a copy. The style of his phrasing may prove controversial with some collectors, but there is an exciting authenticity to the performance.
