Description
This auction is for a Columbia LP of the Symphony no.9 in C, by Schubert.
The Philharmonia Orchestra is conducted by Otto Klemperer.
First label, silver/blue Columbia, cat. no. SAX 2397, with original inner liner as shown in photograph.

To summarise condition, the LP is visually 'near mint' and audibly excellent, with sleeve bordering around 'excellent' to 'very good'. For those who like to work with percentages, the record would be around 85/90% (I would not rate any LP higher than 95% as very few LPs were perfect, even when new, and this one is 49 years old) and sleeve about 75%.
Visually, the surface is clean and shiny with just one very small, light mark towards the end of side 2, with no spindle traces on the label. Audibly, the main thing to mention is that the leader track at the beginning of each side sounds uncomfortable, but this settles down before the music begins. Side one then plays well. Side two is slightly less good with some light clicks around the beginning of the side. There is nothing to show on the record surface and the odd clicks to which I refer, do not occur at the same point around circumference, so possibly it is just static, but I mention here anyway so that there will not be any misunderstandings after the sale. This record can give a great deal more listening pleasure yet, in period stereo!
I should perhaps, mention that the sleeve is slightly less good than the record. The corners show signs of wear, but there is also a manufacturing fault with it, inasmuch that there are wrinkles on both front and back, where the paper facia and laminate have not been laid quite flat on the cardboard folder.
This reading of Klemperer conducting Schubert's Great Symphony is available secondhand, on various editions of both CD and LP from around £5-£25. First labels dating from the 1961 issue in stereo typically attract a price tag of £60-£80. Bidding for this copy starts, appropriately enough, at thirty-three-and-a-third GBP!
