Description

KWELA by GWIGWI'S BAND  [77 Records AFRO/101]

ORIGINAL 1966 pressing on the 77 RECORDS label is this incredibly rare LP of South African Afro-jazz-funk.

THIS IS AN ORIGINAL COPY OF THIS IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND RECORD IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.

Gwigwi's band consisted of six musicians, four who were native to South Africa and had settled in London in the mid 60's: Gwigwi Mrwebi - alto sax, Dudu Pukwana - alto sax, Chris McGregor - piano, and Ronnie Beer - tenor sax. They were joined by Coleridge Goode on bass and Laurie Allen on drums.

McGregor went on to be a giant in the UK prog/jazz world and Allen later played drums for both Gong & Robert Wyatt. Goode and Beer also had stellar careers in the UK jazz scene and Pukwana is a legend in the afro funk/beat scene.

The LP was produced by Doug Dobell, who owned the 77 Records label and the famous Dobell’s record store in London.

The music itself is Kwela, the popular dance music of South Africa in the 60's. There are 16 songs on the album, each track featuring solos from Pukwana, Mrwebi, or McGregor and sometimes two of the three. See the photo for track listings.

This is definitely a must for any fans searching for the roots of afro beat, jazz, or funk and should also interest fans of the UK jazz and progressive scenes.

The record is in NEAR MINT condition. There are no marks and no scratches. The label is flawless, with no spindle marks or any other marks.

The laminated cover is in NEAR MINT condition with no bends, marks or tears. The corners are in perfect condition. There is some very slight deckling along the open edge from fingers pulling the record out - so slight you hardly see it. The lamination is in perfect condition with no yellowing or cracking. There is some aging of the white areas and a light ring outlining the shape of the record on the back cover due to being stored between other records.

This is a very rare opportunity to get this exceptional record.

I am putting up a lot of rare reggae and African albums in the next few days so check back.
