redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful LP from German Columbia (C 91179, German pressing, white/gold label – ED1, stereo, original inner sleeve included) features Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra's high-octane performances of Hindemith's Sinfonie "Mathis der Maler" and Bartok's Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta, both recorded in 1962.

The Hindemith in particular was a long a staple of Karajan's repertoire and he and the Berlin Philharmonic bring an opulence to this score that is just breathtaking without any loss of bite, and this is true of the Bartok as well, which is highly atmospheric throughout.

Among his very finest recordings, they are here preserved in their best possible pressing; this album was the winner of the “Preis der Deutschen Schallplatten Kritik”.

Of a later EMI LP re-issue, The Gramophone wrote in its August 1981 review:

“A marvelously atmospheric and committed account of the Bartók, and a refined and spacious reading of the Hindemith.

“Karajan first recorded the Bartok in 1949 (Columbia) and rerecorded it in the late 1960s (DG). Though not quite so well recorded as the DG, this is a marvellously atmospheric and committed account, in some ways fresher and more spontaneous than the later version. The difference in recording quality is not really an issue, however: the DG has rather more body in the middle register but perhaps less detail at the top. I would prefer this to its mid-price rivals, the DG Karajan and the 1977 Ozawa version with the Boston Symphony Orchestra (DG), good though they both are.

“Karajan's account of the Mathis symphony is fine-spun in texture and spacious in design. He produces more refined and transparent textures than one is accustomed to in Hindemith, and both the dynamic nuances and details of phrasing are attentive without one being unduly conscious of any beautification. The finale is splendidly dramatic too. (I should say that Jeremy Noble, writing in 1962, thought differently and while marvelling at Karajan's consistently beautiful sound would have welcomed sharper definition and bite.) Although the recording has a certain pallor when put alongside Walter Legge's Philharmonia recordings of this period, it is thoroughly atmospheric.”

There are fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Everett Helm, printed in German only.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. Really, the flaws are minimal – some slight bumping and weaar at corners, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, owners' markings or other, defects and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
