Description

redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful LP from Columbia (33CX 1335, English EMI pressing, blue/gold label, mono) fentitled “Philharmonia Promenade Concert” features conductor Herbert von Karajan and the Philharmonia in a truly brilliant and rousing program of orchestral showpieces and bon-bons.

The Philharmonia consistently shows why many regarded it as the world’s finest orchestra at that time, every department shining, the music brought off with tremendous panache and poetry. Even Karajan’s detractors would be hard put to fault him here – there is nothing slick or urbane about the music-making he elicits from the Philharmonia – masterful conducting.

The exact contents are as follows:

Emil Waldteufel: “The Skaters” Waltz Op. 183 – rec. July 1953

Johann Strauss II: Tristsch-Tratsch Polka Op. 214 – rec. July 1955

Johann Strauss I: Radetzky March Op. 228 – rec. July 1955

Emmanuel Chabrier: España · rapsodie – rec. July 1953

Emamnuel Chabrier: Joyeuse March – rec. July 1955

Johann Strauss II: Thunder and Lightning Polka Op. 324 – rec. July 1955

Franz von Suppe: “Light Cavalry” Overture – rec. July 1955

Jaromir Weinberger: Polka, from Schwanda the Bagpiper – rec. July 1954

Jacques Offenbach: Overture to Orpheus and the Underworld – rec. July 1955

This remarkable album – made fairly early in the Karajan/Philharmonia partnership – was produced by Walter Legge and engineered by Douglas Larter, all performances taped in the fabled acoustics of London’s Kingsway Hall.

There are informative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Burnett James, printed in English only. The lovely cover design is uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. The only flaw preventing a NM grading concerns a 2” seamsplit to the upper edge. There is also a sticker to the rear panel and mild aging. However, the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not completely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), this is a fine copy and playback is superb. However, if you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP – this is a lovely collector's copy.
