ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This fine LP from Telefunken (LT 6630, German pressing, purple/gold label, mono, original inner sleeve included) features conductor Joseph Keilberth and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra’s magnificent accounts of Beethoven’s Symphonies No. 1 in C Major Op. 21 and No. 2 in D Major Op. 36*, recorded in the warm acoustics of the Kulturraum, Bamburg, on 1 and 3* July 1958.
The underrated Keilberth was a remarkable musician, one now enjoying critical reassesment following Testament's issue of his stunning 1955 Bayreuth Wagner 'Ring Cycle'. One can only hope that more re-issues from Keilberth's large and highly distinguished discography will follow. His Beethoven is revelatory, and Telefunken’s engineering is superb throughout.
Incidentally, the front cover art reproduces a photo fo Kaspar von Zumbusch’s 1880 statue of the composer, erected in the Beethovenplatz, near the Konzerthaus in Vienna. There are excellent liner notes (uncredited) – provided in German and English – on the reverse side of the jacket.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the laminated jacket is VERY GOOD. There is edgewear, more so along the spine and at corners, some creasing, mild ringwear, and a small tear to the rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits, owners’ markings, bends, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a fine copy and the playback is quite superb. Those requiring CD silent surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
