Kenny Wheeler Windmill Tilter UK Fontana JAZZ LP NM
JOHN McLAUGHLIN, Tony Coe, Mike Gibbs et al.
Kenny Wheeler – Windmill Tilter: The Story of Don Quixote LP (orig. UK STEREO Fontana STL 5494—1969)
Recorded: March 1968 ~ release date: September 1969.
On offer here is an EXTREMELY RARE original British issue of KENNY WHEELER's debut album “Windmill Tilter“ on the FONTANA label. Kenny Wheeler performed and recorded his own compositions (based on “The Story of Don Quixote“) with the JOHN DANKWORTH ORCHESTRA, whose members included JOHN McLAUGHLIN, DAVE HOLLAND, TONY COE, MIKE GIBBS and HENRY LOWTHER. This album once belonged to the now deceased Brisbane (formerly Newcastle, Aust.) jazz historian and trumpet-flugelhorn player, RAY SCRIBNER.
RECORD REVIEWS:
(1) "Windmill Tilter" is probably my favourite LP ever. The solo performances are excellent but the ensemble writing is a particular joy. If this LP had been released by Gil Evans it would be much better known. For sax players, there are great solo spots for John Dankworth (on "The Cave of Montesinos") and the mighty Tony Coe (especially on the epic set closer "Don No More"). (2) In 1968 Wheeler recorded his first LP as leader, one of the most ambitious debuts in jazz. “Windmill Tilter: The Story of Don Quixote” was an extended suite with Wheeler’s charts performed by the Johnny Dankworth Orchestra and a more intimate improvising group with the trumpeter supported by Holland and guitarist John McLaughlin. It was a brilliant debut for Wheeler, demonstrating both his talents for extended compositions and his distinctive trumpet style, and it also heralds the sudden creative explosion in British jazz. When Holland and McLaughlin left the country to join the Miles Davis band it would alert Britain and the world to the quality of the country’s musicians. (www.taringa.net)
