Up for bid is a rare 78 "I Will Be Da/Throw 'Way Dem Ole Shoes" by Washington's Kentucky Quartette. This was released by Silvertone (4016), a Sears, Roebuck, & Co. product. 78 has no chips or cracks, with scuffs and light scratches on each side. There is wear on the inner labels. I have listened to this 78, and both sides play through with no skips but with noticeable surface noise (constant hiss, crackle, some pops). This is an historic recording of early Negro Spirituals. Here is an excerpt from the site www.mainspringpress.com/sears-labels.html :

"The more familiar tan-label issues include many rare and important recordings, such as this pseudonymous release by Alberta Hunter and the Red Onion Jazz Babies with Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet." (This is in reference to the particular inner label on this 78).

According to the following excerpt from the same article, I believe this 78 to have been produced sometime between 1916 and 1918. Please read: "In early 1918, Columbia decided to stop supplying client labels, and by the end of that year, Sears had discontinued Silvertone records in favor of standard Columbia discs. Having dropped Silvertone, however, Sears was no longer able to offer an inexpensive 10" record. Consequently, the company reintroduced the Silvertone label in late 1919 or early 1920, this time in double-sided form. The new records, numbered in a 5000 series, bore blue labels and a redesigned trademark, in flowing silver script, which Sears registered as a trademark on November 24, 1919." This 78 is in the 4000 series, so it was definitely produced before 1919.
