A Truly Unique Pressing!
This 1983 record (copyrighted in 1982) features an unusually simple deadwax matrix: just the record number & LP Side plus the letters “HUB”. The label even notes hand written “1982 test pressing,” which is pictured.... so it may—or may not—have been intended as a test pressing. I can not verify or deny this as I was not there when this record was made. Archives show this came out to the public in 1983 and was only pressed for the public in 1983.
What makes this copy especially unique is the “HUB” marking in the deadwax. It indicates that the metal stamper originally came from the Hub-Servall pressing plant in New Jersey. Hub-Servall went out of business in the 1970s, but in this pressing, the original HUB stampers were reused likely by another pressing plant as of yet not known who bought the press and never changed out the stampers as of this pressing anyhow.. Old stampers and metal parts were often sold, reused, or loaned to or transferred between plants, making this a rare example of that practice. While collectors have heard of such occurrences, this is my first time seeing one personally as I have been selling records a very long time—truly a distinctive piece for a vinyl collection.
This record comes from the estate of a former Folkways Records executive that we purchased directly from his estate. It was part of the rare and obscure section of his collection, making it one that he set aside in a special section do to the importance of this record to him. More likely than not a standout item for serious collectors if he had this in his special section.
