ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This rare and little-known LP from Melodiya (CM 02077-78, Soviet pressing, pink label, stereo) features the outstanding violinist Valeri Klimov in a remarkable performance of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 61, recorded in 1958 with the State Symphony Orchestra of the USSR and on the podium, no less, pianist/conductor Carlo Zecchi.
Klimov offers a visionary, Olympian reading of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, and Zecchi’s accompaniment is similarly inspired, built in great stately paragraphs – indeed, there is a great sense of occasion to this performance, which should be better known. Incidenteally, Klimov plays Kreisler’s cadenzas.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the 'softcover' jacket is FAIR- (Note: This is at the lower end of my grading scale). There considerable edgewear and creasing, some small cuts along the open side of the jacket, discoloration, a former price sticker to the rear panel, and just general overall wear. Despite this short laundry list of defects, which I detail out of duty, the album remains solid and presentation worthy – not a collector’s copy, but still a more than serviceable one.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT-. The surfaces are not always CD silent, but in general the playback is really superb – there is great presence to the sound and to Klimov's playing. Those desiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this is an excellent collector's copy.
