Description
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This wonderful LP from Philips (9500 681, Dutch pressing, red/white label, stereo) features conductor Kirill Kondrashin and the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s resplendent account of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade Op. 35, with legendary Concertmaster Herman Krebbers the charismatic soloist. Recorded in the rich acoustics of the Concertgebouw in June 1979, this reading remains a landwork in the work’s discography – truly magnificent.
Wrote the superlative critic and editor David Hurwitz for ClassicsToday: “This Scheherazade has long been one of the work’s reference recordings. I do wish we could hear the tam-tam in the finale climax, but that lacuna aside there’s nothing here to criticize: amazing playing, particularly from the woodwind soloists, and a conductor who perfectly balances lusciousness (first and third movements) with virtuosity and excitement (second and fourth). It’s just wonderful.”
Incidentally, the lovely cover art was executed by Kay Nielsen, courtesy of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket – provided in English, German, and French – were written by Joan Ashley.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is a bend/crush to the lower-right corner and some slight edgewear, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and very attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT and the playback is superb – a truly fine collector's copy.
