Kool & The Gang - Light Of Worlds, Polydor 2310 357 Kool & The Gang's most ambitious album up to then, 'Light of Worlds' has the band moving away from the harder funk of their last three releases. More room is given to the band's jazz roots and the overall sound is more polished through it as well. The lurching instrumental jam "Street Corner Symphony" hangs from Kool Bell's driving bass figures, with D.T. Thomas and Kalis Bayyan providing sassy sax improvs. Ricky West takes the lead on the well-meant but somewhat preachy "Fruitman", a bumpin' mid-paced groove espousing the goodness of fruit and vegetables. The message gets deeper on "Rhyme - Tyme People", a funk work-out incorporating the main hook of their big hit "Hollywood Swinging", whereas the title-track has a Latin groove and harmony vocalizing that makes it sound similar to Earth Wind & Fire's contemporary material. "Whiting H. & G." is an instrumental that seems to have been especially created for Ricky West to use his synthesizer on. It is followed by the lush "You Don't Have to Change", which features gorgeous jazz guitar chords from Clay Smith. The No. 1 R&B-smash "Higher Plane" follows suit and certainly is the hardest funk excursion here, but even better known today may well be the mellow, groovy instrumental "Summer Madness", which was later sampled for Will Smith's "Summertime" in the early '90s. The closing "Here After" ends the LP on a slightly esotheric note, with asian gongs, kalimba and eerie synth wails providing a minimalist soundscape for Khalis to sermonize to.

Grading scale: NM > EX > VG+ > VG > Good > Poor)

Vinyl: VG+. Signs of use but nothing that really compromises the record visually or audibly. The finish is shiny with light scuffs or very light scratches that do not affect the listening experience. Labels are superb, clean and bright without marks. Spindle shows no sign of wear. And no warps.
