Detlev Augustus Lais (born June 11, 1911 in Frankfurt am Main, † 1978 in East Sussex, England) was a German saxophonist and pop singer.
Life
Lais spent his youth in Cologne, where his father worked as a bank director. Here he attended the music college and learned the violin there. From 1934 he played in Eugen Wolff's orchestra in Berlin, since 1938 he was a member of Kurt Hohenberger's orchestra and plays tenor saxophone and clarinet. From 1943 to 1945 he was a tenor saxophonist with the German Dance and Entertainment Orchestra. He was a saxophonist in the big big bands in Berlin, for example with Walter Dobschinski, Kurt Widmann, Willy Berking and Freddie Brocksieper. In the field of jazz he was involved in 133 recording sessions between 1933 and 1952. [1]
Then Lais appeared as a pop singer from 1945 to 1954. He sang as a soloist and in a duo with Anneliese Rothenberger and very often with Renée Franke. "A White Wedding Carriage" (1952) is one of the most famous hits by Detlev Lais and Renée Franke. After 1954 he played the tenor saxophone in various jazz formations. As a saxophonist, he recorded with Kurt Hohenberger, Kurt Henkels, Lutz Templin, the Radio Berlin Tanzorchester, Kurt Widmann (Symphony) and Eugen Wolff.
He played in the films At Each Finger Ten (1953), Schlagerparade (1953) and The Legs of Dolores (1957). He also composed the songs Lauter sweet things and Wie ein Praline. Walter Rothenburg wrote the lyrics of these songs.
The title Wenn ich seh dich seh dich was hit of the year 1945. The title La-Le-Lu with Anneliese Rothenberger in a duet was hit of the year 1950. His last recording The Story of Tina was made on January 23, 1957 for Polydor.
